Project: Moon Sand

Moon Sand.

This moon sand project was one of the best ever for the boys! All three of them played happily for over two hours. Anything that captures their attention for more than five minutes is a hit in my book! Especially if I can find a project that all three of them agree on, which is rare with the age gap. Not only did this moon sand capture their attention, it was inexpensive to make, and clean up was a breeze. I herded everyone outside before bath time. When they were done playing, everyone went inside and I popped them right into the tub. Later, we hosed down the back porch and all evidence of our mess was gone! Voila — mommy’s dream come true!

Ingredients for Moon Sand

  • 4 cups of flour
  • 1/2 cup of baby oil {you can use veggie oil if you are concerned about a child consuming it}
  • you can also add liquid food coloring to the baby oil if you want — we chose to leave ours plain

It’s crazy to me to think that many people would spend $20 for a package of moon sand from the store. Because we did it ourselves, I had no problem with saving whatever I could and then hosing down the rest. Even making a double batch with a five pound bag of flour was less than $5.

How to Make Moon Sand

Mix the ingredients. When you first add the baby oil to the flour, it will become lumpy. Just use your fingers to play with the flour and mix it. In no time, it will become silky smooth. It’s easily moldable, so I hauled out beach toys {think sand castle construction kit} plus spoons and bowls. The boys had fun playing with their fingers and spooning it from bowl to bowl. Jorryn was a little more adventuresome and also created a castle and snowman.

It was terrific to see the boys imaginations come to life as they created things. You can easily store any leftovers in an airtight container for next time. I highly recommend this activity for before bath time. 😉 Enjoy!
