We have tried a couple of fruit snack recipes since we stopped buying the boxed kind. This is by far our favorite. Both the texture and flavor were perfect! I was a little nervous when I finished cooking them and put them in the fridge to harden, but when they came out and I sliced them up, they were delicious!

Ingredients
  • 1 cup mixed berries {I have used both fresh strawberries and frozen strawberries and it turned out great!}
  • ¼ cup of water
  • ½ cup of applesauce
  • ½ cup of fruit juice {I used mixed berry - but you could use anything that worked well with the fruit flavor you pick!}
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 2 packets of gelatin
Instructions
  1. Over medium heat, in a pan, combine your berries, water, and fruit juice.
  2. For my strawberries, I cooked long enough for them to break down a bit and become more mushy. {Great visual, right?}
  3. Next, add your applesauce and honey.
  4. Then, add your gelatin. Make sure to whisk continuously when you add your gelatin or you will get lumps!!
  5. I continued to stir over the heat for about 3 minutes after adding the gelatin.
  6. Then, I poured in a 9x9 baking dish.
  7. I set the dish in the fridge until the fruit snacks were completely firm and ready to cut.
  8. I sliced into bite sized cubes and put them in a Tupperware container. I left ours in the fridge, but I've also read that you can leave them at room temperature.

      YES! Nothing artificial or junky! My oldest has a sensitivity to red food coloring, so I LOVE these for him! 🙂

    MMMM those sound yummy!!! I buy all natural ones from when I was little and my mom was a vegetarian. They were our treat when we were good in the store…

    Our son LOVES them and I have been sending them over to my brother who is deployed. He looks forward to them in his care packages! Now if only I could get my husband to like them lol

    I love the Stretch Island Fruit that Beanybopp mentioned, too. Anything dried fruit, really. I wonder how these would turn out with pectin instead of gelatin. I may give it a try! (I don’t eat gelatin due to the animal products in it)

    I commented but somehow it looks like it went to the Oatmeal cookie one. It is for here though. 🙁 Maybe I am wrong but that is what showed when it said it was waiting for moderation…. So I will just do this again.
    Sounds great and my granddaughter will love this. She loves the Welch’s Fruit snacks and this would be so much better. 🙂 Thanks for sharing.
