Strawberry Banana Smoothie.
This year, I am working hard to make sure Jorryn is learning practical skills around the house. We’ll be focusing on cooking, cleaning, and money. I want him to be responsible when he grows up: for himself and his future wife and family! We’re making a conscious effort to move beyond regular helping that he would normally do and having him be more in charge of certain tasks. I am planning to have him cook one meal for our family every two weeks. He is excited to learn more in the kitchen and I am excited to see him grow in confidence of what he is capable of!
His first cooking adventure was a strawberry banana smoothie. I told him he could pick what he wanted to make and this was it! It was the first time I’ve also let him use the knife to cut off the strawberry tops and he was very excited — although a little nervous! I stood by and watched carefully and thankfully he didn’t have any accidents!
After washing the strawberries, he cut off the tops.
Next, he added a banana and a cup of milk. He also added a scoop of protein powder!
He loved using the blender! I kept my mouth shut throughout the process and let him also choose what settings would best mix his smoothie. I was amazed at how much of a “helicopter” mom I’ve become with some things. It was hard to keep from giving him pieces of advice. He assured me he wanted to figure it out on his own and now I’m glad that I let him!

Strawberry Banana Recipe
- 8 large strawberries
- 1 banana
- 1 cup of milk
- 1 scoop of protein powder — we prefer Visalus
- Cut tops off strawberries.
- Put all ingredients in a blender.
- Blend on high until totally smooth.
- Serve immediately!
- Refrigerate any leftovers.
