Homemade Play Dough

Back at Christmas, I made homemade magic playdough powder as part of gifts for some of our little cousins and I kept some for the boys to play with but it was one of those things that we just never got around to making. This week, we finally did it! It was easy to put together and turned out great! All of us had a great time smooshing it together. Jorryn and Zane even came up with some creative designs!

Ingredients for Homemade Play Dough

  • 1 1/3 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 2 packets of Kool Aid

To Mix

  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of veggie oil

How to Make Homemade Play Dough

  • Mix all dry ingredients together. If you choose to do different flavors of Kool Aid for different colors, you’ll want to make sure you do this recipe separately for each color! You can bag up each color individually as a gift -or- if you’re ready to make it right away, keep reading!
  • Over medium heat, pour your water and oil in a pan.
  • Add the dry ingredients. Start stirring!
  • Keep stirring until the mixture starts to get tighter. Don’t panic if it starts getting lumpy!
  • Once it’s dry, it’s done! Scrape out of the pan {I used a spatula to stir and scrape} and then knead with your hands some after it’s cool. At first, I thought the play dough was too lumpy, but after working it with my hands for a few minutes, it turned out super smooth, just like the name brand stuff!
  • If it seems too tough after kneading it, mix in a little bit more oil!
