Grand Re-Opening: Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium

Jorryn and I had the honor of being one of the first to experience the newly renovated Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium at the Grand Rapids Public Museum. The planetarium is located inside the museum and is named after the Grand Rapids born astronaut who lost his life in a tragic fire abroad the Apollo 1 in 1967.

For our viewing, we watched a fascinating and moving documentary about Roger B. Chaffee. What a incredible individual! It makes his death even more tragic. It was amazing learning about his life and how determined he was. Since my dad worked in Grand Rapids when I was younger, I was familiar with his name, but not his story. It was great to learn more.

We also spent several minutes flying around the galaxy. The visuals were inspiring! What a beautiful universe we live in. It was amazing to see how much technology has developed that we could see so much of the universe, all while tipped back in a comfy chair. It opens up a whole new world that most would never be able to experience otherwise.

Finally, we watched the movie Dynamic Earth, narrated by Liam Neeson. The graphics are truly a masterpiece. It was fascinating to go around the universe learning about different parts of our solar system. Jorryn was equally as spell bound as me for the entire display. In fact, when it finished he asked if we could watch it again!

Afterwards, we enjoyed looking at the displays set up around the planetarium. I even convinced Jorryn to be an astronaut for a minute. 😉 Over dinner, we talked about things we learned during the movies. I loved that something so enjoyable could also be such an excellent learning experience for him.

The Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium is open to the public for shows everyday of the week. Tickets are $4 and require a general admission ticket purchase as well. It’s free for museum members. You can follow them on Facebook and Twitter to get updates anytime.
