Family Day @ Grand Rapids Public Museum

The past year has been SO busy for our family. Usually by the weekend I feel overwhelmed at both the hours I’ve put into work and the items still left to accomplish. Despite my best efforts, I feel like we’ve been living a very unbalanced life. Our days are full of “have tos” — work, school, eating, cleaning… and not as many fun occasions as I would like.

So I was thrilled when we planned a family day to one of our favorite locations to visit: the Grand Rapids Public Museum! The boys literally counted down the days until our visit… and it certainly didn’t disappoint.

Not only we were able to enjoy all the regular features {like the Streets of old Grand Rapids, Habitats and the Carousel} we enjoyed the Dinosaurs Unearthed and Lego exhibits happening now!

Dinosaurs Unearthed was one of the absolute most fun exhibits we have every enjoyed. All three boys were totally smitten as we wandered through and explored. I loved that there so many hands on features for them to enjoy, as well as observing the lifelike dinosaurs. The boys were able to touch and feel what different bones felt like in one area. They could explore dinosaur sounds, anatomy and digestion as well. Zane especially loved using controls at two stations to manipulate the animatronic dinosaur. I was fascinated to discover that paleontologists have discovered feathers on some dinosaurs. The exhibit explores the link of dinosaurs to our modern day birds. The kids dig site was a huge hit. So good in fact, I didn’t think I was going to be able to get Zane and Shay away from it. Kids were encouraged to use brushes to dig and discover fossils just like real paleontologists.

After walking among the dinosaurs, we took a break for lunch. Then, we headed to the Lego exhibit. While Zane and Shay had a great time building — I loved that there were jumbo sized Legos for smaller kids — this exhibit really stole Jorryn’s heart. Jorryn loves to build. He spends quite a bit of time with his Legos each day in fact. For him to see what is possible at such a large scale was fantastic.

Grand Rapids Public Museum (39)The exhibit features architectural masterpieces recreated with LEGO© bricks by Certified Lego Professional Adam Reed Tucker. Adam is an engineer… who just happens to love to build with Legos. He is now one of twelve certified professionals worldwide with Lego. Jorryn was so intrigued by the idea of someone actually working for Lego. I was intrigued that said person had achieved higher education. 😉 It was absolutely incredible to see what has has accomplished with these bricks. It was incredible to see how mnay hours and bricks went into each project.

We also loved another section of the Lego exhibit which featured some local builders. It was a city block of old Grand Rapids. There were even people inside the buildings! I also loved that they encouraged interaction with fun eye spy cards.

I strongly encourage you to visit Grand Rapids Public Museum while these two features are happening. Your entire family will love your trip! The Dinosaurs Unearthed exhibit will be there until April 27. The Lego exhibit until August 31. Plan on spending the day making memories and learning!

The museum is open Monday 9-5, Tuesday – 9-8, Wednesday-Saturday 9-5 and Sunday 12-5. Be sure to follow Grand Rapids Public Museum on Facebook and Twitter as well.
