Dear PR Rep: A Heartfelt Letter

dear pr rep

Layne here.

You know, the blogger who works 1,000 hours a week in front of her computer.

The one who does the laundry, the dishes, makes the meals, home schools, saves the world. All while working on blog posts, brand promotions, and freelance writing.

I love my blog. I love to write. I love to promote awesome products that I truly feel improve my readers lives.

I do not however like you, PR Rep who thinks it is appropriate or acceptable to email me and offer me a coupon for a piece of chicken in exchange for blogging about your client’s product. Really. A piece of chicken? Is this piece of chicken made of gold? Cause even if it’s finger lickin’ good, I’m NOT blogging for a piece of chicken.

I find it rather insulting actually.

What would you say if your boss called you in on Monday morning and said “Listen, I know you work hard to provide a great service to our clients, but this week, instead of your paycheck, we’ll be giving you a piece of chicken.”

Would you do it?

So why do YOU think it’s okay to email bloggers and offer them ridiculous “perks” in exchange for free promotion. If you wouldn’t take that payment yourself for a job well done, you should be ashamed to email it and offer it to anyone else.

And don’t even bother responding and telling me how you’re sorry but you “don’t have a budget” for this brand. Because I just saw their several thousand dollar ad on TV a minute ago.

I offer a quality service that I’m proud of. And I do it for a fee. Just like how you have a job that you do and earn a fee. It’s really not so complicated.

So, unless you’re going to send me enough chicken to feed my family for the next six months, I’m really not interested in this promotion.

Thanks anyways.

Amen! And I’m not doing a 300 word blog post for $5!

    • Layne Quintanilla May 23, 2013 at 1:02 am #

AMEN! LOL!! I am THRILLED to work with great companies, promoting great products at a fair price. I truly do not comprehend some of these offers. I was in real world corporate America. I am talented. I am NOT BLOGGING FOR A PIECE OF CHICKEN!!

Love it! Time is valuable. I am amazed at some of the requests I receive.

    • Layne Quintanilla May 23, 2013 at 8:59 am #

Yes, it is! We are offering a valuable service!!

It must be the week with lame PR people. I have had 2 this week. One that wanted me to promote a Lifetime show, you know they made money selling ads space for the commercials. Also another wanting me to place a ad for a 16×20 canvas print. Really some of these people should wake up and smell the coffee.-I am done working for FREE!

    • Layne Quintanilla May 23, 2013 at 12:13 pm #

I saw the one about Lifetime as well. You know if they can afford to run ad space on print and TV, they can pay a blogger. AND it’s so dumb to try to say that all these national outlets are promoting them for free. Errrgh.

Maybe a slab of bacon?? It’s really getting pricey to buy lately! lol! Well said. I think I got that one too.

    • Layne Quintanilla May 23, 2013 at 12:53 pm #

LOL! Really, maybe they just picked the wrong kind of meat! I would probably do a lot of promotion for a free years worth of bacon! πŸ˜‰

  6. Melanie K. May 23, 2013 at 12:50 pm #

I wish all bloggers seen it this way. If they did, we wouldn’t be getting these crazy “offers”! Well said!

    • Layne Quintanilla May 23, 2013 at 12:54 pm #

Indeed! I saw someone post in a blogging group earlier today “Why is it a big deal to do the free offers?” REALLY!? Do you not realize you’re advertising for someone for FREE!? Free does not pay the bills or feed the kids. It’s time to realize your self worth!!

  7. Sandy Cain May 23, 2013 at 2:01 pm #

WTG, Layne! I’d tell them their “offer” wasn’t worth chicken feed. And then I’d suggest what they could with their hens and cocks. (so to speak).

    • Layne Quintanilla May 23, 2013 at 2:05 pm #

LOL, Sandy! Domingo said it was a “fowl” offer. Haha!!

  8. Stacey Orendach May 23, 2013 at 6:18 pm #

Really a piece of Chicken!! It sounds more like they were trying to offer you a piece bull ….. πŸ˜‰ You Rock! Keep up the great posts, and I am sure someone will offer you the whole turkey πŸ˜€

    • Layne Quintanilla May 23, 2013 at 6:35 pm #

LOL!! That’s what is always so crazy to me! I have some GREAT companies I’m working with that understand you get what you pay for. Then I get these bogus offers for pieces of chicken. Oi. Thanks, Stacey! πŸ™‚

Love it! Thanks for putting into words (publicly) how most every other blogger out there feels. Some do work for free and like Melanie said, if others would stop doing it, we’d all be better off.

    • Layne Quintanilla May 25, 2013 at 5:53 pm #

Yep! It’s sad that some bloggers don’t even realize that they are giving away valuable advertising space!

  10. Michelle Cantu May 24, 2013 at 1:06 am #

I Love you Layne!! Take that PR rep and all the rest of you. Next time I get offered a high res photo in exchange for my post I may just reply with this post πŸ™‚

    • Layne Quintanilla May 25, 2013 at 5:52 pm #

Hahaha! I love you too, Michelle! And you are welcome to shoot it off. I know a couple girls did the other day and got emails back from people! πŸ™‚

  11. Tabitha Willette June 8, 2013 at 11:11 am #

wow really. I have not gotten anything like that but i think i would be insulted too πŸ™ I may not be a big blog but I do know i am worth a whole lot more then that.

    • Layne Quintanilla June 8, 2013 at 12:47 pm #

It’s crazy some of the “offers” I’ve received! I’m glad you haven’t gotten them too, Tabitha! πŸ™‚ Thanks for stopping by!
